Weather : Dry  with Cold breeze.

An excellent start to the year. Walking along the frozen sands and tidal edges, we  were  able to  get within touching  distance of four Dunlin, who were more concerned with feeding than the close presence of humans. Superb flocks of waders were noted,, and during lunch we were able to  observe a flock of 400+ Cormorant resting on a sandbank. This was the first time that any of those present had witnessed such a large number of these birds together at one time. Good flocks of Goldfinch and Curlew brought the outing to a satisfactory close.

Weather:  Bright & Cool wind

Sunday 29th was the group annual trip down the North Wales Coast. There was snow on the mountains but sun on the coast! What contrast from the weather we have had all week.
Sea watching was poorer than normally, red throated diver weren't that plenty, common scoter were splash diving, great crested grebe were in summer plumage. 1 razorbill was a bit better. Waders on the point included oystercatchers, turnstones, ringed plover, 2 dunlin and 1 knot.
We travelled on to the Spinnies which held its usual little egrets and overwintering greenshanks but no kingfisher. The feeders close to the hide gave good views of chaffinch and greenfinch. We travelled back to RSPB Conwy and tried to get a coffee but it now close at 4.30 for drinks with the reserve staying open till 5.15 when they lock the gates.

Seawatching off Llanfairfechan prom saw the group catching up with the usual coastal suspects - a single Great Northern Diver was the highlight for those who managed to pick it up on the choppy sea, with a supporting cast of at least 30 Red-throated Divers and 3 Razorbills - but it was the final bird of the day that added the most colour to the trip. A Hoopoe, an early spring overshoot from Spain, had somehow managed to end up on a windswept hillside southwest of Llanwrst. It showed well for the group in a hail shower, not the sort of weather the bird would be used to!

A quiet visit, not initially helped by the weather. Coal Tit and Nuthatch were the early highlights, but after lunch as the tide receded exposing the sandbanks and the weather improving, birdwise things picked up. 9 Herons were seen on one sandbank, and a good close  up view of a Treecreeper and Pied Wagtail made a satisfactory finish.
