The weather was contrary to the forecast, and paved the way for another successful outing to a well known Liverpool Park. Great Crested Grebe and Tufted Duck were the main highlights on the lake, followed by excellent sightings of Redwing, Siskin and Treecreeper amongst others. 2 small flocks of Oystercatcher and a pair of Stock doves were part of a fitting finale top an enjoyable day.

Some of the members of the group asked for some local walks looking at habitats and the birds that live there. So yesterday I led a short walk around the Black Woods and Childwall Woods and fields.
As this was a woodland walk we expected lots of Tits, Thrush's, Magpies and what ever turned up.
Well what did we see you ask? In the Black Woods it was really good to see lots of dead and rotting trees. In this small wood there was probably 4 to 5 pairs of Great spotted woodpecker. With all this rotting timber, Treecreeper and Nuthatch were doing very well feeding on the wood munching insects.
One of the major surprises for all of us was the wonderful views of a Buzzard flying over the wood 4 miles from the centre of Liverpool. Could this be a new breeding bird in Liverpool for 08!
The outing was quickly over but as we were all saying goodbye a Goldcrest flew from the conifers on the roundabout on Woolton rd.

Mere Sands has always been a favourite of mine for a quiet walk around and see a good number of birds in a short amount of time. Last Sunday, 24th Feb. I lead the group walk around this wonderful Lancashire Wildlife trust site. We all watched the goings on at the various feeding stations. Good numbers of Reed buntings, Chaffinch, Blackbirds, Tree sparrows, Nuthatch and lots more, kept us all amused for awhile. A pair of Siskins joined the rest of the birds and that helped highlight some of the differences of the finch family. We were informed that the Water Rail shows quite well at the Lancaster hide but we had missed it and there was no food out.

A stroll around the mere and the hides between the rain shows helped to really increase our list for the day including Treecreeper and lots of ducks such as Gadwall, Teal, Wigeon and a female Pochard.
We had lunch back at the Lancaster hide and the feeding table had been filled, and so out popped the water rail. When you look at it's toes they look like worms are escaping over the wood!!
The only downside to the day or not was seeing a dead Tawny owl in the visitor centre that had been found on the reserve.
It was a good day out for all 25 of us.

Weather:  Windy & Showery

Seawatching off Llanfairfechan prom saw the group catching up with the usual coastal suspects - a single Great Northern Diver was the highlight for those who managed to pick it up on the choppy sea, with a supporting cast of at least 30 Red-throated Divers and 3 Razorbills - but it was the final bird of the day that added the most colour to the trip. A Hoopoe, an early spring overshoot from Spain, had somehow managed to end up on a windswept hillside southwest of Llanwrst. It showed well for the group in a hail shower, not the sort of weather the bird would be used to!

A quiet but rewarding visit to a  rural part of The Wirral, nevertheless produced excellent sightings of Kestrel, Partridge, Finches and Tits amongst others. However, the close up sighting of Yellowhammers certainly took the chill off the prevailing wind.

Weather:  Mainly dry with sunny periods and warm

Once again the weather forecasters got it wrong! The outing got off to a excellent start, with up to 50 Mute Swan on the main lake, along with 2 Black Swan, Tufted Duck and Gt Crested Grebe amongst others. After witnessing a bit of 'bovver' between a Heron and some Magpies, we came across a new and fantastic colony of Sand Martins wheeling and dealing around their unusual nesting sites, in the crevices of a disused stone bridge over the river - MAGIC! Those who stayed away missed a treat.

At the start of the meeting, it felt like January rather than July, and because of the very strong winds, the number of species  seen was lower than expected, however there were several highlights, including  good sightings of Goldfinch, Yellowhammer and a bit of 'bovver' between a Reed Bunting and a Yellowhammer.

Another quiet but rewarding day. It was obvious that the Great Crested Grebes had had a successful season on Carr Mill Dam, judging by the number of chicks seen with their parent birds. Goldfinch and Swallow were in abundance, however the main highlight occurred during our lunch stop, when we had a superb close sighting of a Common Sandpiper.

Weather: Dry and Windy

We took a Coastal walk along Crosby Coastal park from the Coast guard end by Hall rd.  This get to know your coastal birds event started off with westerly winds pushing in a higher tide.  Not to worry as the birds were sitting on the slum clearance rubble that is used as sea defence and the training wall for the Alt.  Lapwings, golden plover, turnstone showed in between the rocks but we did manage to creep to with 10 ft of a curlew.  What a wonderfully cryptic bird when seen close.

Some stonechats and wheatears were about but the greenfinch had been feeding on the rose hips and that had stained their beaks.  As we walked closer to the Alt we could see huge flocks of waders on the north part of the estuary on the protected Altcar rifle range beach.  We are so blessed to have such a wider variety of waders in large numbers.  At this point I had to leave and Phil took over.  I left to watch a stunning performance by LFC over Man U.
