INDOOR MEETINGS PROFILE FOR JANUARY TO DECEMBER 2012

Meetings held at Mossley Hill Church

        

Indoor meetings are held on MONDAYS (third monday of the month, see dates) in the church hall of   The Meeting Room Mossley Hill Parish Church, (St. Mathew and St. James) near to the junction of Rose Lane and Mossley Hill Road.

Meetings commence at 7. 30pm and last about 2 hours with an interval for refreshments.

Admission charges Adults £1 and Accompanied Juniors 60p. The admission charge includes Tea/Coffee during the interval. All donations gratefully received. There is a car park at the hall, and Merseybus routes 61 & 80 (Arriva/Merseybus) stop nearby. Mossley Hill station,on the Merseyrail City Line is a 3 min. walk away. 

Car parking at indoor meetings - If the car park at the Church is full when you arrive, please DO NOT park on the grass. You may park your vehicle in Mossley Hill Road. Thank you.

 

 

  

  TIM MELLING   JANUARY  16th         Tim Melling   WILDLIFE OF SCILLY 

We welcome Tim Melling as our first speaker of our 40th year.  Tim will be telling us about ‘The Wildlife of Scilly’.  Many of you who have seen Tim before know that he will be enthusing us about the wonderful and varied islands that make up the Isles of Scilly and the nature that can be seen there.  It promises to be an entertaining and educational evening.

Jeff Clark’s talk on ‘The Mersey Beat‘ — isn’t that some long lost police programme?  In one of Jeff’s old jobs he was Halton Council’s ‘Wildspaces Officer’, so he is very knowledgeable about the Mersey and some of hidden treasures.  Knowing Jeff, it will be a very good talk... and will require audience participation!

India has always been on my list of a place to visit ;not just for the birds but for the big cat!  Mike will be telling us of his trials and tribulations trying to photograph the wildlife there

 

APRIL  18th 

Its that time of year again – THE AGM!  After the formal business is out of the way, we will have a relaxing second half.  Offers of slides etc. most welcome, PLUS of course nominations for the committee will be most welcome- We need your  help - to be given to the Group Leader or Secretary by 10th April please.

SATURDAY 14th JANUARY 2012

Hale lighthouse HALE   

Meet 11am at the village shops. Farmland, woodland paths. Hale Marsh and Pickering's Pasture are located to the east of Hale Village between Hale and Widnes. Good numbers of Teal feed along the creeks on the marsh and flocks of waders may be seen roosting on the marsh (Golden plover, Lapwing, Curlew, Redshank, Dunlin). Flocks of up to several  hundred Canada geese roost on the marsh during high tides.

MONDAY 30th JANUARY 2012

Childwall Wood CHILDWALL WOODS

Meet 10.45am at the corner of Aldbourne Avenue/Woolton Road.  The idea of this walk is to get you more familiar with woodland birds, such as finches, tits and hopefully woodpecker, as well as their habitat.  No facilities.

DIBBINSDALE DIBBINSDALE LNR  

Meet 10.15 Central station.  Ancient woodland once part of the Royal forest of Wirral dating back to the end of the last ice age, Reed beds in the flooded valley bottom, Marshland  favoured by willows and dogwoods, and meadow grasslands.( A41 from Birkenhead or Chester .or M53(Junction4) via turn offs for  B5137  Spital Rd. The reserve  is signposted_ .

SUNDAY 11th MARCH 2012

MOORE  NR MOORE NR  

Meet 10.30 reserve entrance. Moore Nature Reserve is situated between the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey. The reserve  boasta five large lakes surrounded by extensive woodland, meadows and wetlands, made accessible by a network of paths and bird hides. Its many habitats provide a home for a variety of birds, mammals, insects, plants, amphibians and fungi. From the A56 (from Warrington of the M56 J11) turn at the traffic lights opposite the Walton Arms public house, following the sign for Moore. From Moore village turn right into Moore Lane. Follow this road over the swingbridge to arrive at Moore Nature Reserve

SUNDAY 22nd APRIL 2012

Leighton Moss LEIGHTON MOSS  

The largest remaining reedbed in north-west England, with shallow meres and fringing sedge and woodland, attracts a wonderful range of wildlife to Leighton Moss.  Among its special birds are breeding bitterns, bearded tits and marsh harriers, with water rails and pochards, and its mammals include roe and red deer  5 Hides &.extensive visitor facilities: tiolets, cafe, shop at RSPB Centre.   Remember to  bring your RSPB membership cards

black grouse RUABON MOOR/WORLDS END/LlANDEGA  NTH WALES

 Meet 5am LlANDEGA 

In search of Black Grouse. The Ruabon Mountain Black Grouse Hide is based on the edge of Ruabon Moor at the Llandegla Forest Centre. Much of the area's wildlife can be seen from the road and from paths across the moors. Please keep on paths to protect the birds and their sensitive habitat. Follow the signs for Coed Llandegla Forest (LL11 3AA .OS ref SJ 227520)   which is located on the A525,off the A483, seven miles west of Wrexham. Follow the road towards Minera and World's End.

FAIRY GLEN PARBOLD PARBOLD AND FAIRY GLEN

Woodland and Farmland birds. 5m guided walk. Stiles and steep steps on the walk, may be muddy.A visit to a new venue. Due to uncertainty of bus times, contact leader beforehand for details of meeting place and time.

west flash Wigan Flashes: 

Meet 11am at Wigan Pier, 5 mins walk from stations. A walk on mostly level paths, a good variety of water and woodland species hould be seen. Facilities in Wigan town centre, but none on walk.

RSPB Marshside Reserve  BURTON MERE WETLANDS

Meet 10.00am reserve entrance off Puddington lane . This will be your chance to see one of our favourite reserves .Meet 10:30am in the reserve car park. The much expanded Inner Marsh Farm might have changed its name but with new hides and big plans its worth a visit. The reserve entrance is sign posted through the village of Puddington on the Wirral.REMEMBER to ring along your national RSPB Membership card.

The Mersey Ferry Heritage & Wildlife Birders Cruise will be held on

MERE SANDS MERE SANDS WOOD NR 

An autumnal visit to a popular area nature reserve. Lakes, mature broadleaved and conifer woodland, sandy, wet meadows and heaths. Woodland birds, wildfowl and maybe Kingisher. Meet 10.30am  Car Park. Mere Sands Wood, The Wildlife Trust, Holmeswood Road,Rufford, Lancashire. L40 1TG

SATURDAY 10th NOVEMBER 2012  

    

Eastham CP Wildlife Garden EASTHAM COUNTRY PARK

A late autumnal visit to a popular venue .Meet 11am in the country park Visitor centre. Eastham Country Park is not a well-known site for most people but it does give some wonderful views across the Mersey to Liverpool. The site is a mixture of mature woodland and estuary to one side of it. The country park is by the banks of the Mersey, found by travelling via the Birkenhead Tunnel, following the A41 towards Chester. You will see a brown tourist sign showing the way to the park .

RSPB Marshside Reserve MARSHSIDE

A return visit to a popular venue. Meet 10.30 am at the Sand Washing Plant car park, opposite the RSPB Marshside reserve entrance, 1 mile north of Southport on the coast rd. Wader flocks, Geese, Raptors etc. REMEMBER to ring along your national RSPB Membership card, and wrap up well..
