INDOOR MEETINGS PROFILE FOR JANUARY TO DECEMBER 2008

Meetings held at Mossley Hill Church

        

Indoor meetings are held on MONDAYS (third monday of the month, see dates) in the church hall of   The Meeting Room Mossley Hill Parish Church, (St. Mathew and St. James) near to the junction of Rose Lane and Mossley Hill Road.

Meetings commence at 7. 30pm and last about 2 hours with an interval for refreshments.

Admission charges Adults £1 and Accompanied Juniors 60p. The admission charge includes Tea/Coffee during the interval. All donations gratefully received. There is a car park at the hall, and Merseybus routes 61 & 80 (Arriva/Merseybus) stop nearby. Mossley Hill station,on the Merseyrail City Line is a 3 min. walk away. 

Car parking at indoor meetings - If the car park at the Church is full when you arrive, please DO NOT park on the grass. You may park your vehicle in Mossley Hill Road. Thank you.

 

JANUARY  21ST  

To start the new year of talks we welcome back Steve Knell.  Steve is a wonderful photographer and his pictures have graced the front cover of Birds magazine.  One day I will travel to the top of Scotland and visit all the wonderful islands, but for tonight Steve will be taking us to Shetland and introducing us to the Wildlife of Shetland

 

FEBRUARY  18TH             Stephen Murphy

We extend a warm welcome to our new speaker Stephen Murphy.  Stephen is a local lad who spends his time studying the Hen Harriers and their movement, so it only right that his talk is about Hen Harriers in the North West .

 MARCH  17TH      John Gramauskas

How many times have you visited the Sefton Coast and thought how nice, how local.  Well John Gramauskas senior ranger for Sefton Coast and Countryside service will be talking to us about the Changes along the Sefton Coast .  It will be a fascinating evening learning about this huge wildlife zone.

 

APRIL  21ST

Its that time of year again – THE AGM!  After the formal business is out of the way, we will have a relaxing second half.  Offers of slides etc. most welcome, PLUS of course nominations for the committee will be most welcome- We need your  help - to be given to the Group Leader or Secretary by 10th April please.  

SEPTEMBER  15TH                       Mike Mckavett

A welcome return for  Tonight's speaker is Mike McKavett . He will takes us on an Aegean adventure, From Mitilini the capital of Lesvos to Antalya on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Turkey.  Fancy some  Fab photo's of Kruper's Nuthatch, Masked Shrike & Ruppell's Warbler or how about a close up view of some nice poisonous snakes.

Well its that man again! Making his now long established annual visit to us, we as always extend a warm welcome to Gordon Yates. Bird Habitats of the Pennines & Scotland is the title of his superb cine films tonight. One performance only, so come early to claim your seat on an evening guaranteed to please.

Pinewoods Sefton Coast  SATURDAY 12th JANUARY  SEFTON COAST

Meet 10.30am at Hightown Station (0953 or 1008 train from Central Station), for a fairly easy walk along the River Alt, continuing along perimeter of rifle range, then farmland and pinewoods, including a visit to the Cabin Hill local reserve. Skylark, Finches and Geese should be amongst species seen. No facilities, NOTE: Meeting ends Formby Station. This is a joint  trip with the MNA

Sefton Park Palm House  MONDAY 14th JANUARY   SEFTON PARK & OTTERSPOOL

Meet 10.45am at the Boathouse. Buses 60,61,68,82 to Aigburth Vale. A walk around a wll known local park and the riverside at Otterspool. a mixed habitat should produce an equally good variety of birds. Tiolet facilities should be available in Sefton Park. This is a joint  trip with the MNA

Winter Feeding Station     'Big' Garden Birdwatch 2008      

 Sefton Park Palm House : 27 January 2008

Our events start at 11am and finish at 4pm. Closely observe the birds at our  feeding stations through telescopes. People on hand for identification and general information on Garden Birdwatching and the RSPB.  Kids colouring activities/ Make your own pine code birdfeeder to take home. 

 

Beech Tree Childwall Woods   SATURDAY 9th FEBRUARY   CHILDWALL WOODS

A visit to local woods. Meet 9.30am at  the corner of Aldbourne Road/Woolton Road. Buses 35,75 & 81 apply.  The idea of this walk is to get you more familiarised with woodland birds.  This will be a short walk looking at woodland birds in their natural habitat.  Species should include, Woodpecker, Jay, Finch’s, and Tits. No facilities. Muddy paths likely. Walk will last about 2 hrs.

Mere Sands Wood  Nature Reserve  SUNDAY 24th FEBRUARY     MERE SANDS WOOD

A wintertime visit to a popular reserve owned and managed by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. Meet 10.30am at the reserve.  Reserve is half a mile west of Rufford on the B5246, which runs between the A59 at Rufford and A565 at Mere Brow Birds likely to be seen include woodland and water species and hopefully the elusive Kingfisher. Facilities at the Visitor Centre.

Traeth Lafan. Llanfairfechan  SUNDAY 9th MARCH   LLANFAIRFECHAN

Our annual visit to a popular North Wales venue. Meet 10.00am at the sea front promenade(90min drive from Liverpool) Birds likely to be seen include Divers, Waders and Wildfowl. 9.3m high tide at 11.05.Tiolet facilities available. The outing may include a visit to the RSPB reserve at Conwy, so remember to bring along your RSPB membership card!

Seven stars pub  Thornton Hough.  SATURDAY 29th MARCH   THORNTON HOUGH

A new venue for the group. Meet 9.45am Sir Thomas St for bus, or for those travelling by car, 10.45 Thornton Hough Post Office on the B5136 (OS Map 108, ref: 304810) NOTE: On road parking only. A5 mile walk over farm fields with lots of stiles. A good mix of farmland and woodland species will b seen, as well as hopefully plenty of boxing hares. Facilities on walk.

Moses Gate Country Park  SATURDAY 26th APRIL   MOSES GATE C PARK FARNWORTH

 Another new venue for the group. From Liverpool take M62,M61,A6053 (OS Map 109 ref:744069) Allow 60 mins max from start of M62. On the A6053 look out for the brown tourist signs.  Meet  10.45 Country Park car park, Hall Lane, Farnworth. The name is not a personal name, but a corruption of the word 'mosses' meaning peaty or marshy lands, and gate is from the Old English 'gata' meaning a way across, so we have the way though the mosses (Kearsley Moss, Clifton Moss, Linnyshaw Moss etc.) This  attraction is centred on three large lakes and a large area of parkland, the largest lake  is reserved for migratory birds and wildlife.Their Bird Hide overlooks a wild setting of trees and bushes with a scattering of bird tables and hanging feeders that attract wild birds of many varieties This is a joint  trip with the MNA

Pendle Hill -  Nogger SUNDAY 4TH MAY   PENDLE  HILL

Meet 10.30 am . at the side of Pendle Hill by Pendle House farm.  Travel up the M6 turn off on to the M65.  At junction 13 on the M65 turn off and follow signs to Barley.  As you go through Barley, Pendle hill is on your left and please park on the road.  It will be an hard walk up to the trig point but we hope to see Dotterel and Red Grouse at the top.

Meet 9.30am . by the Brickwall public house.  This is another of our short walks trying to familiarise you with farmland species.  A gentle stroll but bring boots or wellies.

Croxteth Park WEDNESDAY 11TH JUNE   CROXTETH COUNTRY PARK

Meet 8pm .CP Car Park. The LNR comprises 50ha of woodland, rough grassland and pasture with several ponds and is bordered by the River Alt.   Hoping to see Woodcock and various visiting members of the warbler family.

WEDNESDAY 13 & THURSDAY 14 AUGUST 2008 – LIVERBIRD DISCOVERY CRUISES

 

Once again we are proud to host the annual Wildlife Discovery Cruises aboard  Mersey Ferries in partnership with National Museums Liverpool and the RSPB. We go cruising along the Mersey and into the Bay to view the birds and wildlife with live commentary and expert spotters on hand to answer any of your questions and point out the wildlife to be found on our River. Along with quizzes, fact sheets, art competitions and hands on exhibits this is a great trip out for all the family. These cruises are extremely popular so advance booking is necessary.

The cruise departs Seacombe at 11.00am, Liverpool at 11.10am and Woodside at 11.20am. Cruise duration approximately 3 hours.

Price £10.00 for adults and £5.00 for children (3-15) .. Advanced booking necessary.

 

 

Carr Mill Dam SATURDAY 30th AUGUST  CARR MILL & SANKEY VALLEY

Meet 9.45am at Lime St Station. A pleasant and easy 5 mile walk incorporating farmland, woodland, Carr Mill Dam and country lanes, also there are 2 stiles en route. A mixed habitat should produce a good variety of species, maybe another good view of Little Owl  Great Crested Grebe Kingfisher . Stout footwear essential as some paths may be muddy. No facilities. Walk will end at Garswood station, half hourly service back to Liverpool. NOTE: Parking in the short station approach is strictly for rail users only.  Rail Map

The group birding!  SUNDAY 5th OCTOBER   WEAVER BEND

Meet 10.30am at the Frodsham Garden Centre on mill Lane, off the A56 (Runcorn side of Frodsham). Flat and easy walk by the River Weaver at Frodsham and surrounding area. The sludge beds are a good site for waders and passage migrants. no guaranteed facilities.

Meet 11.00am.  Rufford Station.  Rufford is an area of farmland but the water areas like the canal can be hidden gems.  During the last 5minutes of our 2005 visit  the group came across 4 different kingfishers, will we be lucky again?

A return visit to a popular venue. Meet 10.30 am at the Sand Washing Plant car park, opposite the RSPB Marshside reserve entrance, 1 mile north of Southport on the coast rd. Wader flocks, Geese, Raptors etc. REMEMBER to ring along your national RSPB Membership card, and wrap up well..
