INDOOR MEETINGS PROFILE FOR JANUARY TO DECEMBER 2007
Indoor
meetings are held on MONDAYS
(third
monday of the month, see dates) in the church hall of
Mossley Meetings commence at 7. 30pm and last about 2 hours with an interval for refreshments. Admission charges Adults £1 and Accompanied Juniors 60p. The admission charge includes Tea/Coffee during the interval. All donations gratefully received. There is a car park at the hall, and Merseybus routes 61 & 80 (Arriva/Merseybus) stop nearby. Mossley Hill station,on the Merseyrail City Line is a 3 min. walk away. Car parking at indoor meetings - If the car park at the Church is full when you arrive, please DO NOT park on the grass. You may park your vehicle in Mossley Hill Road. Thank you.
JANUARY 15th To start our 35th year, we extend a very warm welcome to a popular speaker with the group, John Lawton Roberts. Over the years he has expertly shown us just what can be found locally and further a field in all aspects of the natural world. Tonight he will illustrate and tell us about the Wildlife of Llangollen. A rewarding and intriguing evening awaits.

For our concluding lecture, we welcome a new speaker to our group, Sheffield bird photographer Paul Hobson, who will enthrall us with his fascinating lecture on the birdlife and wildlife of the Peak District. Helping us discover the beauty of nature around us.This wonderful area has lots of special wildlife and birds. It is surprising how it copes with all the pressures of public access or does it!!

OUTDOOR MEETING PROFILES FOR JANUARY TO DECEMBER 2007.
Meet 10.30am at the entrance point of Marton Mere caravan site. This site is off the M55 near Blackpool not the WWT site!. Marton Mere is a Local Nature Reserve is a tranquil refuge on Blackpool’s urban fringe, important for nature conservation. The reserve is nationally recognised, as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its birds but also has important populations of dragonflies, butterflies, hoverflies and other animals such as bats. The site contains a diversity of habitats including a reedbed, lake and grassland and small pockets of woodland and scrub. Species should include ducks, geese, swans, owls and possibly Bittern. Meet 10.45am at Garswood Station. A pleasant and easy 5 mile walk incorporating farmland, woodland, Carr Mill Dam and country lanes, also there are 2 stiles en route. A mixed habitat should produce a good variety of species, maybe another good view of Little Owl Great Crested Grebe Kingfisher . Stout footwear essential as some paths may be muddy. No facilities. Walk will end at Garswood station, half hourly service back to Liverpool. NOTE: Parking in the short station approach is strictly for rail users only. A visit to local woods. Meet 10.30am at the corner of Aldbourne Road/Woolton Road. Buses 35,75 & 81 apply. A gentle stroll through both Black Wood and Childwall Woods. Woodland bird species expected. Our annual visit to a popular North Wales venue. Meet 10.30am at the sea front promenade(90min drive from Liverpool) Birds likely to be seen include Divers, Waders and Wildfowl. 9.3m high tide at 11.05.Tiolet facilities available. Meet 10.30am at the visitor centre. Eastham Country Park is not a well-known site for most people but it does give some wonderful views across the Mersey to Liverpool. The site is a mixture of mature woodland and estuary to one side of it. The country park is by the banks of the Mersey, found by travelling via the Birkenhead Tunnel, following the A41 towards Chester. You will see a brown tourist sign showing the way to the park .Public transport: 20 min walk from Bromborough station or Firstbus Liverpool to Chester (1) bus form Sir Thomas Street, alight stop after police station. A visit to a well known local park. Meet 11.00am at the corner of Calderstones Road/Menlove Avenue. Buses 74,75,76 & 61 stop in nearby Crompton's Lane. Tit's, Finches, Ducks, and hopefully Jay and Woodpecker are amongst the species likely to be seen. Facilities should be available. Meeting should last 2 hrs max. Meet 10.45am at the Scotch Piper Inn. Not too far from home, this walk will remind you that you don't need to travel far to appreciate what is right on our doorstep.. A 4 mile easy walk on country lanes, farmland and the towpath of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Some stiles on walk. Arriva bus 300 Liverpool to Southport half hourly service. those going by car MUST NOT park at the Inn or nearby Old Hall Farm, instead take first right past the Scotch Piper, Hall Lane, and park in the lane. Pick up points 8.50am Top of William Brown Street. 9.05am Bus stop on A5080 Bowring Park Road opposite the Rocket, near start of M62. The largest remaining reedbed in north-west England, with shallow meres and fringing sedge and woodland, attracts a wonderful range of wildlife to Leighton Moss. Among its special birds are breeding bitterns, bearded tits and marsh harriers, with water rails and pochards, and its mammals include roe and red deer 5 Hides &.extensive visitor facilities: tiolets, cafe, shop at RSPB Centre. Remember to bring your RSPB membership cards
Meet 10.30am by the Hare & Hounds PH (OS Ref:SD531021-Longshaw) between Billinge and Billinge hospital on the B5206. Parking on nearby roads. Walks to and around the highest point in Merseyside. Spring migrants should feature. Dotterel have been known to visit the area. No facilities. LEADER: Dave Hardy (Tel: Mobile 07722-127974) SUNDAY 10th JUNE LOGGERHEADS Meet at 2.00pm at Loggerheads country park car park, if you can get in!!! This is off the A494 Mold to Ruthin road. This is an afternoon walk looking for warblers and flycatchers in the woods. Dipper, Kingfisher and Grey Wagtail in the stream After the walk we will have an evening meal in the pub before an evening walk looking for owls, woodcock and nightjars. Meet Central Station for the 10.30am train to Hooton. A walk along footpaths and lanes with a variety of mixed habitat, which should result in a good number of species. Facilities at Central Station. Meet 10.30am at the Frodsham Garden Centre on mill Lane, off the A56 (Runcorn side of Frodsham). Flat and easy walk by the River Weaver at Frodsham and surrounding area. A local walk covering the Dee and Mersey Estuaries. Meet 10.45am at Moreton Station 910.10 or10.25 train from central station). An easy walk through the dunes and along the promenade. Waders and Dune species. 9.1m high tide at 11.00am. Depending on the weather, the walk will either end at Meols or Hoylake stations. facilities at Central Station, BUT not guaranteed on walk. SUNDAY 18th NOVEMBER MARBURY COUNTRY PARK A late autumnal visit to a popular venue .An integral part of The Mersey Forest. Stroll through splendid woodlands carpeted with bluebells in the springtime, or relax under the shade of the lime avenues. Wander along the mere with splendid views over the water to the church at Great Budworth, or explore the arboretum and community orchard. Meet 10.30am in the country park (pay & display). Take the M56 eastbound to junction 10, then the A559 Northwich Rd. After 3 miles turn at the petrol station, and follow country park signposts. an easy walk by the mere and through the woodlands. A return visit to a popular venue. Meet 10.30 am at the Sand Washing Plant car park, opposite the RSPB Marshside reserve entrance, 1 mile north of Southport on the coast rd. Meet 10.30am at Hightown Station (0953 or 1008 train from Central Station), for a fairly easy walk along the River Alt, continuing along perimeter of rifle range, then farmland and pinewoods, including a visit to the Cabin Hill local reserve. A walk around a wll known local park and the riverside at Otterspool. a mixed habitat should produce an equally good variety of birds.
