INDOOR MEETINGS PROFILE FOR JANUARY TO DECEMBER 2007

Meetings held at Mossley Hill Church

        

Indoor meetings are held on MONDAYS (third monday of the month, see dates) in the church hall of  Mossley The Meeting Room Hill Parish Church, (St. Mathew and St. James) near to the junction of Rose Lane and Mossley Hill Road.

Meetings commence at 7. 30pm and last about 2 hours with an interval for refreshments.

Admission charges Adults £1 and Accompanied Juniors 60p. The admission charge includes Tea/Coffee during the interval. All donations gratefully received. There is a car park at the hall, and Merseybus routes 61 & 80 (Arriva/Merseybus) stop nearby. Mossley Hill station,on the Merseyrail City Line is a 3 min. walk away. 

Car parking at indoor meetings - If the car park at the Church is full when you arrive, please DO NOT park on the grass. You may park your vehicle in Mossley Hill Road. Thank you.

 

JANUARY 15th 

John Lawton Roberts

To start our 35th year, we extend a very warm welcome to a popular speaker with the group, John Lawton Roberts. Over the years he has expertly shown us just what can be found locally and further a field in all aspects of the natural world. Tonight he will illustrate and tell us about the Wildlife of Llangollen. A rewarding and intriguing  evening awaits.

Making another welcome return to us is Trevor Davenport.  Trevor is a real local speaker living in Mossley Hill.  The talk tonight is Nature Far & Wide and that really fits  in with having a local speaker who has travelled all over the world taking pictures of birds and wildlife where ever he has gone.

MARCH 19th 

For those of you who missed the visit to Hale Duck Decoy, please come and enjoy a wonderful evening with site manager Rob Smith.  Rob has been site manager at Pickering's Pasture for a long time and has seen this site change.  Recently the Hale Duck Decoy has come under his watchful eye and he’s helping with its improvements.

APRIL 16th  


It is that time of the year again for THE AGM!  After the formal business is out of the way, we will have a relaxing second half. Bob Harris our Bird Ringing expert will regale us with the highlights and maybe we shouldn't have bothered lights of his Ringing expeditions.
Nominations for the committee will be most welcome  -  We need your  help - to be given to the Group Leader or Secretary by April 9th please. 

 

SEPTEMBER 17th                                                                                                                                                    Graham Clarkson,  Warden RSPB Marshside

Tonight's speaker Graham Clarkson  on The Ribble Estuary . RSPB Marshside warden Graham tells us why  the Ribble Estuary is living up to its reputation as one of Britain's most important winter habitats for birds. 'It's amazing to think so many birds are gathered together in one place and that many of them have arrived here after flying thousands of miles from their summer breeding ground'  Don't be late

 

OCTOBER 15th                                                                                                                                                 GordonYates

Well its that man again! Making his now long established annual visit to us, we as always extend a warm welcome to Gordon Yates. Islay Magic is the title of his superb cine films tonight. One performance only, so come early to claim your seat on an evening guaranteed to please.

 

NOVEMBER 19th                                                                                                                                              

Tonight's speaker won't have far to go home, he only lives down the hill!!  John Power, another local Lad making an eagerly awaited return visit. Tonight's talk an intriguing   title 'Wild Birds Draw Me '... feeling drawn?   I have to say that I know my limitations were art is concerned!!  John has spoken to the group a couple of times and we have always had an entertaining evening. A night not to be missed

 

DECEMBER 3rd                                                                                                                                                  Paul Hobson

For our concluding lecture, we welcome a new speaker to our group, Sheffield bird photographer  Paul Hobson,  who will enthrall us with his fascinating lecture on the birdlife and wildlife of the Peak District. Helping us discover the beauty of nature around us.This wonderful area has lots of special wildlife and birds.  It is surprising how it copes with all the pressures of public access or does it!!

Marton Mere Reedbed  SUNDAY 14th JANUARY   MARTON MERE  BLACKPOOL

Meet 10.30am at the entrance point of Marton Mere caravan site. This site is off the M55 near Blackpool not the WWT site!. Marton Mere is a Local Nature Reserve is a tranquil refuge on Blackpool’s urban fringe, important for nature conservation. The reserve is nationally recognised, as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its birds but also has important populations of dragonflies, butterflies, hoverflies and other animals such as bats. The site contains a diversity of habitats including a reedbed, lake and grassland and small pockets of  woodland and scrub. Species should include ducks, geese, swans, owls and possibly Bittern.

Reed bed at Carr Mill  SATURDAY 10th FEBRUARY  CARR MILL CIRCULAR

Meet 10.45am at Garswood Station. A pleasant and easy 5 mile walk incorporating farmland, woodland, Carr Mill Dam and country lanes, also there are 2 stiles en route. A mixed habitat should produce a good variety of species, maybe another good view of Little Owl  Great Crested Grebe Kingfisher . Stout footwear essential as some paths may be muddy. No facilities. Walk will end at Garswood station, half hourly service back to Liverpool. NOTE: Parking in the short station approach is strictly for rail users onlyRail Map

Beech Tree Childwall Woods  MONDAY 12th FEBRUARY   CHILDWALL WOODS

A visit to local woods. Meet 10.30am at  the corner of Aldbourne Road/Woolton Road. Buses 35,75 & 81 apply.  A gentle stroll through both Black Wood  and Childwall Woods. Woodland bird species expected. No facilities. Muddy paths likely. Walk will last about 2 hrs.

  SATURDAY 17th FEBRUARY  SLIMBRIDGE WWT RESERVE

This is a joint coach trip with the MNA.  Coach cost £18.00,  please contact John Clegg (0151 523 7353). Admission charges for non WWT members. Pick up points 8.20am Fireside World, Queens Drive opposite the Rocket   - 8.35am Top of William Brown Street.

 

 

Traeth Lafan. Llanfairfechan  SUNDAY 4th MARCH   LLANFAIRFECHAN

Our annual visit to a popular North Wales venue. Meet 10.30am at the sea front promenade(90min drive from Liverpool) Birds likely to be seen include Divers, Waders and Wildfowl. 9.3m high tide at 11.05.Tiolet facilities available. The outing may include a visit to the RSPB reserve at Conwy, so remember to bring along your RSPB membership card!

Eastham Shore  SATURDAY 10th MARCH   EASTHAM COUNTRY PARK

Meet 10.30am at the visitor centre. Eastham Country Park is not a well-known site for most people but it does give some wonderful views across the Mersey to Liverpool. The site is a mixture of mature woodland and estuary to one side of it. The country park is by the banks of the Mersey, found by travelling via the Birkenhead Tunnel, following the A41 towards Chester. You will see a brown tourist sign showing the way to the park .Public transport: 20 min walk from Bromborough station or Firstbus Liverpool to Chester (1) bus form Sir  Thomas Street, alight stop after police station. Facilities should be available.  Woodland and Estuary species should be seen.

Calderstones Lake   MONDAY 12th MARCH   CALDERSTONES PARK

A visit to a well known local park. Meet 11.00am at the corner of Calderstones Road/Menlove Avenue. Buses 74,75,76 & 61 stop in nearby Crompton's Lane. Tit's, Finches, Ducks, and hopefully Jay and Woodpecker are amongst the species likely to be seen. Facilities should be available. Meeting should last 2 hrs max.

The group birding!  SATURDAY 14th APRIL   LYDIATE

Meet 10.45am at the Scotch Piper Inn. Not too far from home, this walk will remind you that you don't need to travel far to appreciate what is right on our doorstep.. A 4 mile easy walk on country lanes, farmland and the towpath of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Some stiles on walk. Arriva bus 300 Liverpool to Southport half hourly service. those going by car MUST NOT park at the Inn or nearby Old Hall Farm, instead take first right past the Scotch Piper, Hall Lane, and park in the lane.  Good variety of species including early migrants likely. No facilities on walk.

  Leighton Moss RSPB reserve  SUNDAY 29th  APRIL     LEIGHTON MOSS

This is a joint coach trip with the MNA.  Coach cost £14.00,  please contact John Clegg.(0151 523 7353). Admission charges for non RSPB members. Pick up points 8.50am Top of William Brown Street. 9.05am Bus stop on A5080 Bowring Park Road opposite the Rocket, near start of M62.    The largest remaining reedbed in north-west England, with shallow meres and fringing sedge and woodland, attracts a wonderful range of wildlife to Leighton Moss.  Among its special birds are breeding bitterns, bearded tits and marsh harriers, with water rails and pochards, and its mammals include roe and red deer  5 Hides &.extensive visitor facilities: tiolets, cafe, shop at RSPB Centre.   Remember to  bring your RSPB membership cards

 

 

Billinge Hill  SATURDAY 12th MAY    BILLINGE HILL

Meet 10.30am by the Hare & Hounds PH (OS Ref:SD531021-Longshaw) between Billinge and Billinge hospital on the B5206. Parking on nearby roads. Walks to and around the highest point in Merseyside. Spring migrants should feature. Dotterel have been known to visit the area.  No facilities.

Loggerheads

  SUNDAY 10th JUNE   LOGGERHEADS

Meet at 2.00pm at Loggerheads country park car park, if you can get in!!!  This is off the A494 Mold to Ruthin road.  This is an afternoon walk looking for warblers and flycatchers in the woods. Dipper, Kingfisher and Grey Wagtail in the stream  After the walk we will have an evening meal in the pub before an evening walk looking for owls, woodcock and nightjars.  Bring the jungle juice if you are easily bitten!!

Meet 10.45am Gathurst station (Wigan-Southport line) Off B5206. OS map 108 ref 541 0721.  A walk in the Douglas Valley. A variety of habitats; Farmland, Woodland and along the Leeds - Liverpool Canal should produce a good mix of birds, butterflies and plants. No guaranteed facilities.

The group birding!  SATURDAY 15th SEPTEMBER   HOOTON

Meet Central Station for the 10.30am train to Hooton. A walk along footpaths and lanes with a variety of mixed habitat, which should result in a good number of species. Facilities at Central Station. For those travelling by car, you can use the pay and display car park at Hooton station, or on nearby roads - No later than 10.45am.

The group birding!  SATURDAY 20th OCTOBER   WEAVER VALLEY

Meet 10.30am at the Frodsham Garden Centre on mill Lane, off the A56 (Runcorn side of Frodsham). Flat and easy walk by the River Weaver at Frodsham and surrounding area. The sludge beds are a good site for waders and passage migrants. no guaranteed facilities.

Leasowe lighthouse -mockbeggar trial   SATURDAY 10th NOVEMBER   MOCKBEGGAR TRAIL

A local walk covering the Dee and Mersey Estuaries. Meet 10.45am at Moreton Station 910.10 or10.25 train from central station). An easy walk through the dunes and along the promenade. Waders and Dune species. 9.1m high tide at 11.00am. Depending on the weather, the walk will either end at Meols or Hoylake stations. facilities at Central Station, BUT not guaranteed on walk.

Marbury Country Park

   SUNDAY 18th NOVEMBER   MARBURY COUNTRY PARK

A late autumnal visit to a popular venue .An integral part of The Mersey Forest. Stroll through splendid woodlands carpeted with bluebells in the springtime, or relax under the shade of the lime avenues. Wander along the mere with splendid views over the water to the church at Great Budworth, or explore the arboretum and community orchard. Meet 10.30am in the country park (pay & display). Take the M56 eastbound to junction 10, then the A559 Northwich Rd. After 3 miles turn at the petrol station, and follow country park signposts. an easy walk by the mere and through the woodlands. Finches, Jay ,Woodpecker and Waterfowl should be amongst the species seen. Toilet facilities should be available.

RSPB Marshside Reserve  SUNDAY 2nd DECEMBER   MARSHSIDE

A return visit to a popular venue. Meet 10.30 am at the Sand Washing Plant car park, opposite the RSPB Marshside reserve entrance, 1 mile north of Southport on the coast rd. Wader flocks, Geese, Raptors etc. REMEMBER to ring along your national RSPB Membership card, and wrap up well..

Pinewoods Sefton Coast  SATURDAY 12th JANUARY  NORTH SEFTON COAST

Meet 10.30am at Hightown Station (0953 or 1008 train from Central Station), for a fairly easy walk along the River Alt, continuing along perimeter of rifle range, then farmland and pinewoods, including a visit to the Cabin Hill local reserve. Skylark, Finches and Geese should be amongst species seen. No facilities, NOTE: Meeting ends Formby Station.

Sefton Park Palm House  MONDAY 14th JANUARY   SEFTON PARK & OTTERSPOOL

Meet 10.45am at the Boathouse. Buses 60,61,68,82 to Aigburth Vale. A walk around a wll known local park and the riverside at Otterspool. a mixed habitat should produce an equally good variety of birds. Tiolet facilities should be available in Sefton Park
